The first commodity exchange in our country was established in the pre-Republic era. With the founding of the Republic, establishment of commodity exchanges in the Aegean, Mediterranean, Thrace and Marmara Regions gained momentum. In our Region, the same process started by late 1930s and the first commodity exchange of the Region was established in Kars in 1936. Like today, the economy of Van was predominantly based on agricultural production in the past and no initiative was taken to establish a commodity exchange in Van.
In 1988, without any demand from our province, the Ministry of Industry and Trade approved the establishment of a Commodity Exchange in Van dated 28.03.1988 with number 88/222. However, this approval had no outcome until 1998.
In 1998, the absence of such and exchange was felt and the then-Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry applied to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the establishment of a commodity exchange, the application was found appropriate and Van Commodity Exchange was established with the Ministry approval dated 17.11.1998 with number 1998/119.
